MBBS in Nepal

MBBS, also known as "Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery", is a course that is pursued to be a doctor. Candidates who have an interest in curing patients and thus serving mankind often take up the course of MBBS. The course is about four-and-a-half years followed by internship of one year, which becomes five-and-a-half years. After earning the MBBS degree, one moves on to become a physician and can practice as a doctor anywhere in the country. The career is emotionally and intellectually rewarding one.

Individuals can also specialize in any medical field and pursue higher education as well. Many students are interested in studying abroad and also pursuing their career as a doctor out of Nepal.

Nepal has mainly two Universities Tribhuvan University (T.U) and Kathmandu University (K.U) and two autonomous institutions BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) & Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS).

Description

Tribhuvan University (TU), established in 1959, is the first University to conduct medical courses in Nepal. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) was established in 1972 under Tribhuvan University with the mandate and the responsibility of training all the categories of health manpower needed in the country. Tu started its MBBS program in 2078.

Eligibilty criteria for Tribhuvan university

i. Completed +2 level in Science (Biology Group) or equivalent, with English, Biology, Physics and Chemistry as main subjects. Minimum of 50% marks (or GPA 2.4) in aggregate in 10+2 or equivalent and not less than 50% marks (C+ in Grading) separately  in each subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB).

ii. Eligible candidates desirous of pursuing MBBS program must take the Medical Entrance Examination conducted by Institute of Medicine, TU. & should qualify for that particular academic year.

iii. All students including international students must take and pass the Medical Entrance Examination conducted by Institute of Medicine.

iv. There is no provision of age bar.

Description

As a precursor to the establishment of a University, a team of dedicated people first established Kathmandu Valley Campus in 1985 to provide education in Intermediate of Science (I.Sc). The same team proposed the establishment of Kathmandu University. After thorough discussion on the proposal in the Parliament, Kathmandu University was granted by an Act of Parliament on December 11, 1991.

Kathmandu University School of medical Sciences (KUSMS) is an institution established in collaboration between Kathmandu University and Dhulikhel Hospital. KUSMS launched its own constituent MBBS program in August 2001.

Completed 10+2 years of education or equivalent qualification with Minimum 2.4 GPA in aggregate and minimum C+ in Physics, Chemistry and Biology separately with minimum C in other subjects

OR

Completed +2 level in Science or equivalent with minimum of 50% marks in aggregate and not less than 50% of marks in each subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB). 

OR 

Completed Bachelor of Science Degree (B.Sc.), recognized by the University, with one of the following subjects viz. Physics, Chemistry, Biology and at least one other prescribed science subject of study up to the ancillary level and having scored not less than an overall aggregate of (10+2 or an equivalent examination) with the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

OR 

Completed requisite course equivalent to +2 Science (Biological Group) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as main subjects after Certificate Level in Health Sciences from Dhulikhel Medical Institute,Kathmandu University and having minimum of 50% marks in aggregate and not less than 50% of marks in each subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB).

Entrance Examination and interview for Nepali Citizens and Foreign Citizens and Nomination from Nepal Government. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) was established on Jan 18, 1993 and subsequently upgraded as an autonomous Health Sciences University on Oct 28, 1998 with a mandate to work towards developing socially responsible and competent health workforce, providing health care & involving in innovative health research.

Candidates must have:

i. passed class XII examination of the 10+2 system, or equivalent with Biology, Physics, Chemistry and English as their major subjects and obtained at least 50% marks each in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and also 50% marks in aggregate in these four subjects; are eligible to apply in the program.

ii. be at least 17 years of age as on 31st December of the entrance exam year are eligible to apply

Note: Candidates from institutions following Grade System must get the certified equivalence marks percentage for their grades.

Description

The Patan Academy of health science is a public not for- profit tertiary academic institution dedicated to improving Nepal’s rural health by training health workers for rural Nepal. The academy consists of a school of medicine, which began to teach prospective doctors in 2010.

Eligibilty criteria for Patan Academy

i. The applicant must be a Nepalese Citizen.

ii. Must have passed +2 or equivalent qualifications with Science or health science (General Medicine/HA, Medical Lab Technology, Ophthalmic Science, Dental Science, Pharmacy) background from institutions recognized by Universities/Board of Nepal having passed Physics, Chemistry and  Biology (PCB) with a minimum of 50% in each subject and also in aggregate.

iii. In addition to the above criteria context of the applicant with Health Science background in Proficiency level he/she should have valid Level 2 (“Kha”) registration from Nepal Health Professional Council and in case of applicants who have done PCL in Pharmacy, Registration should be with Nepal Pharmacy council.

iv. Candidates from health science background must have passed “Bridge Course” from Higher Secondary Education Board/National Examination Board securing a minimum of 50% in PCB. 

v. All Nepali citizens who have completed seventeen (17) years of age and have not exceeded forty (40) years of age on the last day of submission of application.

Entrance Exam Pattern

The Entrance Examination will consist of written examination which will comprise of:

Paper I: Multiple choice questions (MCQs) on Science (Physics, Chemistry & Biology) 

Paper II: Mental Agility test (MAT)

Paper III: Situational Judgment Tests (SJT)

The applicants scoring less than 50% in Science test (Paper I) will be considered ‘fail’ and applicants falling below Two (2) Standard Deviation in Aptitude tests (MAT and SJT) will be considered ‘fail’.

PAHS Entrance Examination only for Nepali citizens. The selection process employs well validated selection tools such as Psychometric Testing combined with carefully structured admission OSCEs (interview).
