BDS in Nepal

BDS course in Nepal consists of four and a half years full-time study and one year of compulsory rotating internship. The first & second year component deals with the basic medical sciences common to other undergraduate medical degree programs. The third year component deals basically with clinical subjects. They will learn related disciplines such as General Medicine, General surgery including Anesthesiology, Forensic Dentistry and Oral Pathology. The fourth year component comprises of phase I & phase II which deals with various dental problems from the patients perspective. Students will learn the essential knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for the practice of dentistry.

Description

Tribhuvan University (TU), established in 1959, is the first University to conduct medical courses in Nepal. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) was established in 1972 under Tribhuvan University with the mandate and the responsibility of training all the categories of health manpower needed in the country.

Eligibilty criteria for Tribhuvan University (TU)

i. Completed +2 level in Science (Biology Group) or equivalent, with English, Biology, Physics and Chemistry as main subjects. Minimum of 50% marks (or GPA 2.4) in aggregate in 10+2 or equivalent and not less than 50% marks (C+ in Grading) separately  in each subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB).

ii. Eligible candidates desirous of pursuing MBBS program must take the Medical Entrance Examination conducted by Institute of Medicine, TU. & should qualify for that particular academic year.

iii. All students including international students must take and pass the Medical Entrance Examination conducted by Institute of Medicine.

Description

As a precursor to the establishment of a University, a team dedicated people first established Kathmandu Valley Campus in 1985 to provide education in Intermediate of Science (I.Sc). The same team proposed the establishment of Kathmandu University. After thorough discussion on the proposal in the Parliament, Kathmandu University was granted by an Act of Parliament on December 11, 1991.

Kathmandu University School of medical Sciences (KUSMS) is an institution established in collaboration between Kathmandu University and Dhulikhel hospital.

Eligibilty criteria for Kathmandu University (KU)

Completed 10+2 years of education or equivalent qualification with Minimum 2.4 GPA in aggregate and minimum C+ in Physics, Chemistry and Biology separately with minimum C in other subjects

OR

Completed 10+2 years of education or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as main subjects and having secured not less than 50% marks in the subjects mentioned above put together and an overall aggregate of 50%.

OR

Completed Bachelor of Science Degree, recognized by the University, with one of the following subjects viz. Physics, Chemistry, Biology and at least one other prescribed science subject of study up to the ancillary level and having scored not less than an overall aggregate of 50% marks, provided that such candidate shall have passed the earlier qualifying examination (10+2 or an equivalent examination) with the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

OR

Completed requisite course equivalent to I. Sc. (Biological Group) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as main subjects after Certificate Level in Health Sciences from Dhulikhel Medical Institute, Kathmandu University and having secured not less than 50% marks in the subjects mentioned above put together and an overall aggregate of 50%.
